Former Aussie Rules player Brendan Murphy inspired Carlow to a surprising win in Dungarvan.
Murphy lorded midfield throughout and then bombed forward to score the all-important goal in the 63rd minute. He was given good assistance by his brother Brian, who chipped in with three points for Luke Dempsey's men.
Carlow came into this game having lost three of their opening five games but settled early, taking the game to their hosts.
They missed some good chances but Brian Murphy kept the scoreboard ticking and his three points helped them to lead by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, with Gary Hurney scoring three of Waterford's points.
In the second half, Carlow's shooting improved and with Murphy and Daniel St Ledger kicking fine points, they moved four points clear.
Waterford briefly threatened a comeback, but Carlow wrapped up the victory when Murphy punished slack defending to score the goal.
It got even worse for the Deise in injury-time when captain Hurney was red-carded after an off-the-ball incident.
