CARLOW rescued victory from the jaws of defeat when a late Brendan Murphy goal three minutes from the end of extra-time handed them a dramatic win in Tullamore on Saturday.
Murphy's late strike was the decisive score in a game that saw both sides reduced to 14, when Offaly's Colin Egan and Carlow's Daniel St Ledger were red-carded.
Carlow made a flying start with a first-minute goal from Eddie Byrne and were 1-7 to 0-6 up at half-time.
Offaly were the better team in the second half and Michael Brazil's goal helped them force extra-time. The home side looked like taking the spoils the added period and led by three points early on, but it was Carlow who marched on.
