Morris stars as Castletown defeat neighbours
Wexford SFC FINAL
COLM MORRIS orchestrated this game from centre-back as Castletown shrugged off the Kilanerin challenge to lift the title at Wexford Park yesterday.
The veteran stole the show with a flawless display in this clash of the neighbouring parishes. He may have been the rock on which so many of the Kilanerin attacks perished, and he also dictating attacks by moving the ball forward with pace and accuracy.
Kilanerin were never able to impose any control. Star attacker Matty Forde was held to a single point from play, with 19-year-old Danny Gardiner shining in his man-marking job.
Castletown opened brightly with points from Brendan Halpin and Conor Carty inside three minutes and led 0-7 to 0-5 at the interval. They extended the lead to four points after 47 minutes but Kilanerin kept in touch and in additional time, a Forde free reduced the margin to three points.
It was cruel on Kilanerin when a shot from sub Bobby Hughes rebounded off the crossbar in the fifth minute of injury-time, but Castletown held out for their first title since 1981.
