McMonagle on the double as Lilywhites dump out Dubs

Two goals from Cian McMonagle helped Kildare comfortably account for Dublin at Parnell Park on Saturday. Two goals from Cian McMonagle helped Kildare comfortably account for Dublin at Parnell Park on Saturday. The visitors dominated from the outset, in contrast to a sloppy and faltering challenge from the holders, with the 45th-minute dismissal of Cillian Sheanon all but ending the hosts' provincial ambitions.

Three points from the impressive Neil Flynn gave Kildare an early lead but Dublin managed to restore parity as Sheanon fired a low shot beyond Sean Dempsey from a tight angle. With Luke Flynn dominating midfield, Kildare regained the initiative through an excellent McMonagle goal and three subsequent points by Wayne Fitzpatrick pushed the Lilies into a deserved 1-8 to 1-3 interval lead.

Dublin were unable to mount a recovery and, after Andy Foley and Sheanon had spurned goal chances, Neil Flynn converted a penalty in the 41st minute. After Sheanon's dismissal, McMonagle added insult to injury in the 47th minute and after Dempsey had made two fine saves, Dublin's only consolation was a 54th minute Colm Basquel goal.
