McInerney exposes gulf in class

Kilmurry-Ibrickane captured their 12th title at Cusack Park, Ennis, yesterday in a one-sided final. It was also the newly crowned champions' third win in four years, having failed to reach the decider last year.
St Joseph's, who were appearing in their first solo football final since 1898, were never in with a chance and were totally outclassed by a professional and well-drilled West Clare outfit, who led by 0-8 to 0-0 at the interval.
Enda Coughlan opened the scoring with a well-taken effort inside a minute and this was quickly followed by a pair of points, one from a free-kick by inspirational wing-forward and man of the match, Ian McInerney.
As the half progressed Kilmurry's midfield pairing of captain Peter O'Dwyer and Paul O'Connor were well on top and, for the opening 20 minutes, effectively stymied St Joseph's efforts to make it into their opponents' last third.
Five St Joseph's wides in the last eight minutes of the half exhibited the gulf in class.
The losers got their first score through Colm Mullen, from a free on 34 minutes. Moments later another pointed free, this time from David O'Brien, made it 0-9 to 0-2, but Kilmurry never flinched and cruised to victory with McInerney always influential.
