McGivney strikes to sink Lake County

LONGFORD 0-10
WESTMEATH 0-9

Longford qualified for their first decider at this level since 2006 following a thrilling finish at Pairc Tailteann last night.

Fourteen-man Westmeath led by two points with five minutes left, but late scores from JJ Matthews and Padraig McCormack levelled proceedings, before James McGivney converted a 35-metre free two minutes from the end to secure victory.

Westmeath left star midfielder John Heslin, who was eligible again following suspension, on the bench at the start, but he entered the fray within a minute of the restart. However, Heslin's game ended when he was shown a straight red card on 49 minutes.

Westmeath led 0-5 to 0-4 at the break, but Longford took control after Heslin walked to edge a thrilling encounter.
