Brian McIver's decision to put his faith in youth paid early dividends at Celtic Park, where Ciaran McFaul was the star of the show in Derry's comfortable win.
It's less than two weeks since McFaul captained Maghera to their second successive Ulster Minor Championship.
His first start for the county seniors was a little ahead of schedule as he came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Declan Mullan, and he justified his inclusion, scoring 1-1.
"Brian rang me to say I was starting and I couldn't believe it, I didn't expect to be in this position so soon," he said.
McFaul's goal was the highlight of his display but he modestly deflected any praise for his goal. "It was the pass from James Kielt that made the goal for me. The older boys like James and Mark Lynch have been brilliant, I'm learning off them all the time," he said.
