Longford 1-16 Sligo 1-8
Free-taker Sean McCormack was in sparkling form as Longford registered their fourth win of the League campaign to stay top.
McCormack bagged 10 points, seven from frees, as a misfiring Sligo, now precariously above the two relegation places, were efficiently put to the sword in an eight-point win at Markievicz Park.
The visitors were four points to the good at the break, 1-7 to 1-3, having dominated much of the first half. One of Sligo's few highlights, Adrian Marren's 14th-minute rifled close-range goal, was cancelled out almost immediately by a wonder goal from Longford's team captain Paul Barden, who fizzed the ball past Philip Greene after 16 minutes.
Brian Kavanagh was another who shone for the winners and it was a foul on the No 14 by Sligo's Johnny Martyn that earned the full-back a second yellow card and a subsequent dismissal in the 52nd minute.
Sloppy Sligo were trailing by four points, 1-9 to 1-5, when Martyn was sent off and minus the injured David Kelly, dogged by a troublesome ankle, they lacked the punch to forge a fightback, although substitute Alan Costello was unlucky that his goalbound effort after 39 minutes was kept out by Longford netminder Damien Sheridan's foot.
Sligo were second best, though, and can have few complaints at the result.
