Mayo kingpins Charlestown hit by double injury blow
Tuesday November 17 2009
MAYO champions Charlestown have been hit with a double injury blow ahead of Sunday's AIB Connacht SFC final against Corofin.
Veteran midfielder David 'Ginger' Tiernan is definitely out and wing-forward Richard Haran is extremely doubtful.
One piece of good news for manager, Ciaran McBrien, is that 'keeper and former county star, John Casey, will be ready despite being forced off with a back injury before extra-time in their thrilling 80-minute semi-final defeat of Castlerea.
Tiernan (35) -- an inspirational figure in Charlestown's midfield -- fractured a bone in his ankle against Castlerea and is now in a cast. Haran broke a bone in his hand during the same game which has left him very doubtful, but he is seeking medical advice to see if it's possible for him to take some part in the action.
Charlestown, who won the provincial title in 2001, will have home advantage against the defending Connacht champions, who are chasing a fifth title but have serious injury problems of their own.
County star, Kieran Fitzgerald, is definitely out with the torn hamstring that kept him out of their semi-final defeat of Glencar/Manorhamilton and they are also without Michael Comer.
And top-scorer, Alan O'Donovan, is in a battle to be back in time.
