Martin Breheny: Big Apple trip just reward for All Stars

FLIGHT EI-105 out of Dublin this morning will have some pretty high-calibre sporting talent on board as the football All Stars of this and last year head for New York, where they will play an exhibition game on Saturday.
The All Star scheme, now sponsored by Opel, has had its critics over the years, but it has stood the test of time, thanks mainly to the fact that it's an excellent concept.
Rewarding All Star recipients with a trip to various locations around the world was one of the objectives of the scheme's founders back in the early 1970s and, with the exception of a period during the 1990s, this has been maintained ever since.
It's a perk that players always enjoy, all the more so nowadays when the demands of the playing season are so incredibly intense.
Hopefully, Sandy won't make a surprise return to New York over the next week!
