Marren treble gets better of Model men

Sligo 4-14 Wexford 1-17

Monday February 13 2012

Adrian Marren hit a superb hat-trick as Sligo overcame Wexford in a thoroughly entertaining tie at Markievicz Park yesterday.

Marren netted a penalty after 90 seconds, rattled home a second after 20 minutes and sealed the victory with an injury-time third, as Sligo proved too strong for Jason Ryan's men.

Alan Costello also netted in the opening half, as Sligo dominated the first period and deservedly led by nine points, 3-7 to 0-7, at the break.

Five of Sligo's forwards scored in that period, while the sixth -- newcomer James Clarke -- won the penalty.

The half-forward line of Mark Breheny, Costello and Pat Hughes were particularly effective, while wing-back Johnny Davey excelled, setting up both of Marren's first-half goals.

Kicked

Redmond Barry, Ciaran Lyng, Ben Brosnan and Adrian Flynn were responsible for Wexford's first-half points, while Flynn kicked two points in the second period as Wexford impressively reduced a 12-point deficit to just three in the fourth quarter.

Substitutes Shane Roche and Colm Morris helped as well, while PJ Banville's goal gave Sligo fans a nervous finish.

But late points from Costello and Brendan Egan eased those nerves, before Marren chipped Anthony Masterson for his third goal to seal the win in stoppage time.
