Magnificent Mayo come good to dethrone Galway

Monday April 10 2006

Mayo 0-15
Galway 1-5
ALL-IRELAND and Connacht champions Galway surrendered their U-21 titles when they lost to Mayo in the provincial final at McHale Park on Saturday.

Despite Galway taking the lead in the opening minute they wasted a succession of chances ending up with seven wides in the first half, doing this with the breeze behind them.

Mayo took a 0-7 to 0-2 lead into the break with Michael Conroy, Joe Dillon and Marcus Hannick contributing to their effort.

They built on their lead in the second half and were ahead by 0-14 to 0-4 before Galway's Fiachra Breathnach struck back with a goal.

But Mayo's Trevor Howley and Keith Higgins - who have already shone at senior level - were really on top of things at the back and dealt with anything that came their way. In the end Mayo ran out comfortable winners.
