Madden on the double for Chriost Ri

Colaiste Chriost Ri 3-6 St Brendan's, killarney 1-8

DEFENDING champions Colaiste Chriost Ri held off a brave late comeback from St Brendan's to advance to the semi-finals.

With Chriost Ri adapting better to the heavy and wet conditions at Knocknagree, the Cork school banged in two first-half goals in a four-minute spell, through Barry Madden and Alan Nolan, as they led 2-5 to 0-4 at half-time.

St Brendan's, however, will rue several missed chances in the second quarter when they were on top, dropping several efforts short, while Bryan O'Shea's strike was well saved.

And with Cork minor Paul Fitzgerald superb in midfield, Chriost Ri moved into a 3-6 to 0-5 lead with 10 minutes left, thanks to Madden's second goal. But St Brendan's refused to give up and cranked up the pressure, racking up 1-3 in the final eight minutes.

O'Shea's neatly finished goal, sandwiched by points from Chris Lawlor, Cathal Sheehan and David O'Donoghue, moved the Kerry school to within four points of Chriost Ri. St Brendan's searched for goals, but Jamie Spillane's effort was straight at the 'keeper while Conor Keane's goal chance was deflected wide for a '45' as Chriost Ri held on.
