Waterford picked up their second win of the campaign after a bizarre goal from Robert Ahearne turned the tide in their favour on an atrocious night at Fraher Field.
"We got a fortuitous goal when the ball hopped over the 'keeper, but in saying that we missed four or five scores," manager Niall Carew said.
Darren Guiry was brought down for a penalty which Paul Whyte converted to put Waterford 1-1 to 0-0 clear after six minutes.
Three points on the trot revived Tipperary and left them only 1-4 to 0-6 behind at the midway mark. Peter Creedon's side drew level early in the second half, but Ahearne's three-pointer on 43 minutes, which bounced over 'keeper Paul Fitzgerald, swung the pendulum in Waterford's favour. Barry Grogan kept Tipperary in touch, but three late points wrapped up a home win.
