Low Croker turnout

THE return of semi-finals to Division 1 of the Allianz Football League for the first time since 2007 didn't excite the public as only 11,342 turned out in Croke Park yesterday.

With Kerry, Mayo and Cork supporters all facing long journeys, the attendance was always likely to be relatively modest but a 20,000 turnout would certainly have been expected.

The disappointing attendance will raise questions about whether it was wise to restore semi-finals after four seasons in which the top-two finishers qualified automatically for the final.
