Glenn Ryan's Longford side bounced back from their opening-game defeat against Meath with a victory at Emmet Park, Killoe last night.
The Longford manager decided to ring seven changes, with Dermot Brady resuming his role in defence.
UCD also reshuffled their starting 15 and corner-forward Donie Kingston was their shining star, kicking six of their 14 points.
The hosts got off to a bright start and fired over seven points without reply, Robbie Smyth raising the white flag four times before he was replaced just before the break.
The students gradually started to find their way and two points from Laois' Kingston and David Larkin put them back in touch. All their hard work over the course of the opening half was undone in the closing minutes, however, as Aidan Rowan found the back of the UCD net with a piledriver from 20 yards out.
Francis McGee gave Longford some breathing room in the second period with three well-taken points. Nevertheless UCD refused to go down without a fight and a brace of points from Kingston and Niall Kilroy put three between the sides with 10 minutes remaining. UCD came very close to finding an equaliser with five minutes left. A long ball was pumped into Paul Cahillane but his low shot went inches wide of the Longford goal, much to the relief of the home supporters.
