Laois role for Clancy

Thursday September 09 2010

FORMER Galway footballer Paul Clancy has joined Laois manager Justin McNulty as a selector with the O'Moore men, WRITES RUAIDHRI O'CONNOR.

The 2001 All-Ireland winner has previously worked as a selector with DIT's Sigerson Cup team and joins team trainer Barry Solan in McNulty's backroom team. McNulty is also in the process of appointing a local selector.

"I searched long and hard for someone who I feel could add something to Laois," said the Armagh man. "I talked to a lot of people and I'm happy that Paul can come on board and add a lot to the set-up."

Elsewhere, Anthony Tohill started the hunt for his International Rules panel in Parnell Park last weekend, though it ended on a sour note, with Limerick midfielder John Galvin picking up a pelvis injury.

Down and Cork players were omitted from training ahead of their All-Ireland final clash but among the players present were Leighton Glynn (Wicklow), Brendan Murphy (Carlow), Stephen Cluxton, Michael Darragh Macauley (both Dublin), Kevin Reilly (Meath) and Joe and Justin McMahon (Tyrone). Bernard and Alan Brogan and Rory O'Carroll are set to be joined by the Kerry contingent at the next training session.

Bernard Brogan, meanwhile, is among an impressive class list of stars who will be aiming for glory at the MBNA Kick Fada in Bray Emmets this Saturday.

The 2009 champion, Brian Sheridan from Meath, will return to defend his title, looking to improve on his winning kick of 71m.

Four-time winner and record holder, Mark Herbert of Kildare, will attempt to capture his fifth title, while Mayo's Conor Mortimer and Monaghan sharpshooter Paul Finlay are also in the line-up.

Jason Ryan and Colm Bonnar have been returned as managers of the Wexford senior football and hurling teams respectively.

Ryan, who has been three years in charge, was given a one-year extension, while Bonnar will set out on his third term in charge of the hurlers. However, there is expected to be change in the back-room set-up with both sides.
