Knockbeg power ahead

Knockbeg Col, Carlow 0-12 Malahide CS 1-6

Saturday January 28 2012

A three-point winning margin did not flatter Knockbeg College in this second-round tie at Dr Cullen Park yesterday, where they were the dominant force for most of the hour.

Malahide opened brightly and led twice early in the game, playing into the strong wind, with points from play by Fionn Cahill and Mark Hazely.

But once Paurice McEvoy and Thomas Daly gained midfield control, Knockbeg rattled off eight unanswered points for the rest of the half, the best coming from long range by Daly on 13 minutes to put his side 0-4 to 0-2 ahead.

Malahide hopes were raised three minutes into the second half when midfielder Conor Mullarkey finished the ball to the net for the tie's only goal.

But Knockbeg retained their grip on the game, and with Stephen Attride, Mark Lyons, Alan Nortor and Eddie O'Dwyer picking off some fine points into the strong wind, they kept a safe distance ahead of the north Dublin side as they advanced to the quarter-finals.
