Limerick edged out Clare in a thrilling contest at the Gaelic Grounds after a goal by James Kelly with the last kick in stoppage time forced extra-time in which Limerick proved the stronger.
Mike Sheehan of Limerick and Podge Collins of Clare both saw red for second yellow-card offences.
Limerick played into the strong wind in the first half and were more than happy to be only a point in arrears at the interval, 0-7 to 1-3, with Jack Donovan raising the green flag.
Limerick had a confidence boost inside 30 seconds of the restart when Eoghan O'Connor kicked the opening point.
Clare then rolled off five points without reply from Killian Malone and a brace from McInerney to lead 0-12 to 1-4. However, points from O'Connor kept Limerick in the game before Kelly's intervention set Limerick up to take the win in extra-time.
