Johnson and Mortimer on fire in battle of former champions

Cavan's Seanie Johnson and Mayo's Conor Mortimer hit 10 points between them as DCU saw off IT Sligo at Ballinode yesterday.

Five of the DCU forwards were on the scoresheet by half-time, as the visitors led 0-6 to 0-3 at the break.

Alan Costello was IT Sligo's only first-half scorer, though two points from Kenneth Sweeney and a fine effort from Tom Parsons saw the home side stay in contention after the restart. But Mortimer and Johnson punished IT Sligo's indiscipline to keep their side in front -- claiming five of DCU's nine second-half points through frees.

Monaghan's Martin McElroy also brought his contribution for the day to three points as the 2006 winners eliminated the 2005 champions.
