New recruit James Kavanagh put in a man of the match performance for Galway today against Sligo while a new-look Tyrone side left Letterkenny in the Dr. McKenna Cup.

Kildare native Kavanagh made his first competitive start for the Tribesmen as they saw off Sligo’s challenge ona  scoreline of 3-10 to 0-08 at Tuam today.

In a low scoring first-half, an Eoin Concannon goal saw the home side lead at the interval 1-2 to 0-4, but with the wind at their backs really kicked on in the second half with two quick-fire goals from Mike Martin and a second from Concannon.

Defending Champions Leitrim won the other game in this group by 1-14 to 1-11 against GMIT in Cloone.

In Group A, it finished a draw at 1-14 apiece between Roscommon and IT Sligo at St Brigid’s GAA club in Kiltoom, with late scores from Neil Collins and Cathal Cregg rescuing a deserved point for the Rossies
