Impressive UCD on right course to end barren spell

UCD 2-11
Trinity College 1-5

UCD could be about to end their barren spell without a Sigerson Cup title after producing an impressive display to see off Trinity College at Belfield.

UCD have lifted the Sigerson more often than any other college but it is now 17 years since they captured it. But with a slew of county players in key positions, the former kingpins will make a strong bid for honours this season.

UCD were on top in the key positions and were well on their way to victory when they turned around level at the break, having played against the wind.

Trinity battled hard throughout and a goal from Daragh Daly saw them lead 1-2 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. But with John Heslin and Craig Dias on top in midfield and Dublin's Rory O'Connor and Meath's Ciaran Lenihan manning the central defensive positions, UCD took control.

Mayo star Kevin McLaughlin was full of strong running and the Laois duo of Paul Cahillane and Donie Kingston picked off some excellent scores.

Cahillane found the net three minutes after the restart to make it 1-6 to 1-3 and then Kingston fired home an excellent effort after 39 minutes. That pushed UCD 2-8 to 1-3 in front, with Trinity not finding the target until the closing minutes when Daly and Paul McPadden found the range.

Overall, it was an impressive display which UCD will feel they can even improve on.
