As I had expected, I had plenty of comments about the piece last week regarding the unusual fact that the town Ballaghaderreen, home of the Mayo county champions, is actually situated in Co Roscommon.
Marty Coleman, however, is obviously a stickler on facts and points out that the club was actually founded in 1885 under the name of Faugh-A-Ballaghs and is one of the oldest clubs in the country. Also, Ballaghaderreen was actually transferred to Co Roscommon in 1898 in a dispute over rates with the landlord Charles Strickland.
And thirdly, Marty says that some of their playing talent actually comes from within Co Mayo, around the area of Cloontia/Derrinacartha. Local history and the GAA – how would the country survive without them?
