Harney ace for Kildare

An ability to find scores from more areas of the field was the key factor as Kildare forged a six-point win over Meath to qualify for the Kehoe Cup final in Newbridge on Saturday.

David Kirby and outstanding midfielder Stephen Clynch registered 15 points of Meath's tally and though David Harney hit eight frees for Kildare, Mark Moloney, Tony Murphy and Martin Fitzgerald also provided significant scoring contributions.

Westmeath qualified to meet Kildare in the final of the Kehoe Cup after defeating a Carlow IT side that included Kilkenny goalkeeper PJ Ryan.

A John Phelan goal put the students ahead in the third minute. Two goals from Derek McNicholas and Alan Dowdall helped the Lake County to a 2-11 to 1-6 lead at half-time.

The students made a brief comeback after the restart before the home side took full control.
