Galligan proves point

Cavan 2-20
Roscommon 1-10

Monday February 08 2010

Rumblings of a possible crisis in Cavan football under Tommy Carr were emphatically crushed by a thoroughly convincing performance against an out-of-sorts Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park in this Division 3 clash.

Full-forward Raymond Galligan was the Breffni men's hero as he produced a master class in the art of point-taking. By the time Galligan was substituted with nine minutes remaining, he had contributed 10 points to his side's cause.

Roscommon made the brighter start and Donal Shine's well-taken goal in the 18th minute underlined the home team's dominance. By the 22nd minute, Fergal O'Donnell's charges were five points to the good but the wheels came off spectacularly after that as Cavan outscored the Connacht side by 2-17 to 0-5 for the remainder of the contest.

By the midway mark, points from wing-forwards Cian Mackey and David Givney alongside three frees from Galligan put the visitors on level terms, 1-6 to 0-9.

Once Cavan hit the front for the first time, however, courtesy of a long-range Galligan free, there was no stopping them.

Midfielder Eoin McGuigan goaled in the 47th minute to hand a significant advantage to the Ulster side. Galligan soon came to the fore as he scored four points in 10 minutes, including a sideline from 40 metres.

Substitute Eddie Reilly pitched in with a brace of scores before Cian Mackey found the net in injury-time.
