Freeman fluffs lines in cruel defeat
Monaghan SFC final replay
Tommy Freeman experienced both extremes of emotion -- adrenalin-pumping elation and total dejection -- in this replay in Inniskeen yesterday.
Had he converted a penalty-kick some two and a half minutes into stoppage-time with his side two points in arrears, it would have catapulted Magheracloone to victory in a game in which they were never in the lead.
It was Clontibret who made most of the running from the start, with a goal by Vincent Corey after just five minutes helping to settle them into the match. They proceeded to dominate for the remainder of the first half, at the end of which they led by 1-5 to 0-4.
That goal by Corey and points by himself and Rodney Gorman left the remainder of the Clontibret scores to Conor McManus, who finished with nine points, seven from frees.
Magheracloone on the other hand relied to a great extent on Freeman, who finished with six points, all from frees.
Entering the final quarter Clontibret enjoyed a five-point lead and looked comfortable. However, Magheracloone gradually whittled Clontibret's lead down to a point. With a minute of normal time remaining Conor McManus restored Clontibret's lead to two points, but Inniskeen's most famous son, poet Patrick Kavanagh, could not have penned a more dramatic finish as Freeman spurned a golden chance for victory.
