It would be unjust to say Sligo are back in business but a rainy January win at least gave new manager Pat Flanagan his first victory in his second competitive game in charge of the men in black at Connolly Park, Collooney.

Twice the third-level students led by three-point margins, 0-3 to 0-0 and 0-5 to 0-2, as GMIT punished Sligo's sluggishness for much of the opening period.

The latter scoreline came after 24 minutes when Eric Monaghan -- the visitors' sharpest forward -- bagged his fourth point of a wet day, although underfoot conditions remained solid.

Sligo, with fit-again David Kelly starting at corner-forward and former Mayo player James Kilcullen in midfield, woke up towards the end of the opening period and, indeed, could have goaled with their second point after 18 minutes when Colm McGee drove over from close range.

In first-half injury-time Eoin McHugh finished off a polished move involving Mark Breheny and Kenneth Sweeney to put Sligo two points clear at 1-4 to 0-5.

Momentum belonged to Sligo in the second half, and they moved five points ahead by the 54th minute, 1-8 to 0-6, as subs Adrian Marren and Cathal Brennan each pointed. GMIT narrowed the gap in the last five minutes, adding two points.

Two black cards were issued in the second half as Charlie Harrison (Sligo) and Ronan Steede (GMIT) were dismissed.
