Farrell dominates as Kildare stroll on

Kildare 1-15
Longford 0-8

It was all too easy for Kildare against champions Longford in the opening round at Newbridge on Saturday.

Gavin Farrell gave an exhibition of midfield play both in the air and on the ground and the visitors struggled to get any ball to their provincial title-winning U-21 stars James McGivney and Robbie Smyth as a result.

There was no problem with supply at the other end though. Tony Gibbons, Niall Kelly and Fergal Conway kicked some fine points, and Farrell contributed two of his own before some more sublime skill by Kelly set up an easy 20th-minute goal for Paddy Brophy.

Kildare led 1-10 to 0-5 at the interval and, with Barry Coffey giving an exhibition of free-taking in the second half, maintained their lead comfortably to the end.
