DIT make history to claim first ever Sigerson title

Published 23/02/2013 | 17:31

DIT have won their first ever Sigerson Cup after defeating UCC by 3-8 to 0-7 in bitterly cold conditions at Athlone IT today.

Contesting only their secind ever final, after their 2009 defeat, DIT produced a dominant display to beat a talented UCC side.

Goals from Dublin’s Ciaran Reddin and Mayo’s Jason Doherty helped push DIT into a commanding half-time lead and their finak goal in the closing stages from impressive Cavan midfielder David Givney sealed their historic victory.

Meath's Brian Menton, who held Donegal's Michael Murphy scoreless from play in yesterday's semi-final win over DCU, was again a tower of strength at the back.

The sides were level at two points apiece when DIT struck for the opening goal with Kerry's Darran O'Sullivan making an incisive run before playing in Reddan who made no mistake.

Both sides traded points again before DIT got another goal just before the break when Kildare's Tomas O'Connor palmed a ball down for Doherty who rattled the net.

DIT led by six at the break and UCC never looked like eating into the lead before the impressive Givney settled matters.
