Dempsey cries foul but numbers don't add up

Luke Dempsey was one unhappy man after Carlow's championship defeat, accusing Wicklow of "incessant fouling", referee Gearoid O Conamha of "suiting their style" and the new rules of turning the game into a lottery. As for Wicklow's first goal, it came after "a throw and an over-carry".
Dempsey claimed that, on this occasion, Wicklow indulged in "non-stop fouling and got very little punishment for it".
Time then to check the match stats for a quick comparison. Guess what? The free count was 22-19 in Carlow's favour. Yes, a majority against Wicklow, but scarcely a wild imbalance.
On then to the stats from the NFL. Guess what? Wicklow finished fifth on the Fair Play Index table, 27 places higher than Carlow, who were second last. Wicklow picked up 22 yellow cards and no red while Carlow received 38 yellows and two reds.
Could Luke's possible dismay be linked to a 10-point defeat?
