TWO second-half goal from St Mary's CBS, Carlow, paved the way for this merited victory over Portmarnock CS at the Carlow Hurling Club grounds yesterday.
The game was spoiled by a flare-up late in the proceedings which led to the dismissal of Portmarnock right full-forward Conor Dunne. Then, in injury-time, Carlow's left half-forward Johnny Dwyer received a straight red card.
The home side had the better of the opening half, but poor shooting led them down badly. The scoring prowess of Shane Carthy, a Dublin minor this year, kept the north Dublin school in touch, the left corner-forward finishing with seven points of his side's total.
Portmarnock went in at the interval ahead by 0-6 to 0-5.
Carlow struck early in the second half for vital scores. Full-forward Graham Delaney levelled from a free. Then, in the 35th minute, Delaney chased a ball going wide, kept it in play, before swivelling to shoot a superb goal.
Portmarnock fought back, but couldn't reduce the arrears below three points as the Carlow defence refused to be breached, with Sean Wogan, Niall Lawlor and Padraig Murphy outstanding.
In injury-time Carthy picked out Matthew Gavin with a punched pass, but Gavin's shot crashed off the crossbar and clear, before Carlow's Simon Doyle clinched victory with their second goal.
