DCU enjoy Sigerson boost as Roche steps up to mark

DCU 1-15

O'Byrne Cup Final

THE students of DCU have the important matter of a Sigerson Cup semi-final against NUI Maynooth this Friday and they gave themselves a confidence-booster for that tie with this victory at St Brigid's Park, Dowdallshill, yesterday.

Louth seemed headed for a repeat of last year's win when they led by three points with eight minutes remaining. However the Wee County challenge faded in the closing stages as Wexford's Shane Roche stepped up to the mark with four unanswered points to clinch an unlikely win for Niall Moyna's side.

The winning score came deep into injury-time when Roche tapped over a close-range free following a foul on himself.

DCU made 12 changes from the side that won in the Sigerson Cup in midweek and they started slowly.

The students eventually got to terms with Louth's bright start and went ahead for the first time when Offaly's Willie Mulhall took a pass from Brian Sheridan and crashed the ball to the net.

With Brian White in fine form, the Wee County were level by the 53rd minute and they then outscored their opponents four points to one in the following six minutes.

A Shane Lennon point on 61 minutes was Louth's last score, though, and Roche proved the match-winner, showing unerring accuracy in the closing stages.
