DCU ease past Queen's in Sigerson

Published 06/02/2013 | 16:01

DCU defied the loss of Cork star Aidan Walsh and Donegal ’keeper Michael Boyle to bag a facile 0-17 to 0-9 win over Queen’s University this afternoon at the DCU Sportsgrounds in the Sigerson Cup.

Cork’s 2010 All-Ireland winning midfielder Walsh and Boyle, Donegal’s All-Ireland winning sub-goalkeeper, fell foul of a new rule that came into effect last year, preventing players who have studied for six years or taken more than two college courses from playing thirdl evel hurling or football.

The games was won in the first half with DCU carving out a 0-7 to 0-6 half-time lead when playing into a strong breeze.

It was plain sailing after that with students from the capital adding 10 points to Queen’s three to advance to a mouthwatering February 14 meeting with UCD in the quarter-finals.
