Cox goal lifts Leitrim to victory

Leitrim were on top throughout against Waterford in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday, in a game where there was little to play for but pride.

After last week's defeat by London, Waterford – who play the winners of the Kerry v Tipperary quarter-final in the Munster SFC – seemed somewhat more dispirited than a Leitrim side who also went under to Offaly a week ago and who have a Connacht championship quarter-final date with New York.

Waterford manager Neil Carew and the Leitrim management duo of Barney Breen and George Dugdale have plenty of work to do with their respective squads before the championship gets under way.

Leitrim led by 1-9 to 2-3 at the interval – and it was a 13th minute Ray Cox goal, set up by Emlyn Mulligan, that put them in the driving seat in the opening half.

Goals from Robert Aherne in the fourth minute and another from Darren Guiry before the break kept Waterford in the hunt however, after trailing by six points at one stage.

Waterford had a let-off in the 36th minute when Paul Brennan blazed a clear-cut goal chance inches wide, but Conor Beirne then stretched Leitrim's lead to 12 points with a 55th-minute goal.

Waterford managed to put some respectability on the scoreboard after that with a goal from Tony Grey and two points from Gary Hurney frees, but the final result was never in doubt in a lacklustre affair.
