Cork dig deep to survive stern Galway examination

CORK 1-19
GALWAY 1-17

CORK made it three wins from three in the Allianz National Football League Division 1 as they held on to get the better of Galway at Pairc Ui Rinn last night.

It was a hard-fought win for Conor Counihan's side, as they allowed a nine-point lead soon after the start of the second half to be whittled down to just three with only seven minutes remaining after Galway sub Garry Rice found the net.

The home side were rattled after being outplayed for much of the second half but managed to close out the game, late points by Donncha O'Connor and Patrick Kelly helping them over the line.

In the first half, Cork were by far the dominant side and good value for their 1-10 to 0-6 lead, Pearse O'Neill's goal in the 29th minute after a well-worked move the crucial score.

After the break, Galway, inspired by Nicky Joyce and Michael Meehan, began to reel in the lead before Cork settled again in the closing stages.
