GAA president Christy Cooney has stressed the importance of developing social interaction between young people through their participation in hurling and football.
Officially launching this year's Feile Peile na nOg, which will be held in Kildare, Cooney told a large gathering at St Conleth's Park, Newbridge, that playing Gaelic games is not all about winning.
"It has been impossible to ignore the real buzz that is detectable around Kildare over the course of my visits to schools and clubs in recent days, and I think everyone lucky enough to be involved with the Féile weekend can expect a competition to rival any," stated Cooney who was guest of honour along with Ladies Football president Pat Quill.
"This competition is about so much more than the games and the social interaction between the players and mentors with people from other clubs, counties and overseas units should ensure that this turns out to be a weekend to remember."
The event, which is sponsored by Coca-Cola, will get underway on July 3 and will see teams from every county in Ireland as well as many overseas units competing.
