JAMES Horan returned from the warmth of Dubai for the winter chill of MacHale Park, where his charges got their campaign off the ground with a deserving three-point win over NUIG.

Just one black card was produced by referee Michael Duffy and that came just before the final whistle, for substitute Sean Kelly.

Goalkeeper Robert Hennelly was the only member of the starting 15 which lost the All-Ireland to Dublin in last night's line-up as Horan brought in seven debutants but the game will be remembered mostly for what Mayo missed as they failed to put away three gaping goal chances.

Back-to-back points from Darren Coen in the second half appeared to have put Mayo in control but they coughed up a soft goal to Sean Moran five minutes from time to leave just a point between the sides.

Coen tapped over his third free, while substitute Michael Conroy added a late point to seal a win for Mayo who face IT Sligo tomorrow in round two.

Mayo led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time -- NUIG led before Tom King, Keith Rogers and Mikey Sweeney kicked three unanswered points.

The students came back with two of their own, the best from Shane Moran on his left boot, before a Hennelly '45' gave Mayo that interval lead.
