Breen goal decisive
MAYNOOTH PP 1-13
SALESIAN COL, Celbridge 1-9
A superb opening 10-minute blitz helped hosts Maynooth PP overcame their local rivals in the first round of the Dublin Schools Senior Football 'A' Championship yesterday.
Hugh Breen's fifth-minute goal helped Maynooth into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead in those opening 10 minutes, and the home side dominated the remainder of the first half to lead 1-6 to 0-2 at the interval.
Celbridge, last year's Leinster Senior 'B' champions, hit back after the resumption and when David Hughes brilliantly fired home a goal, the gap was closed to just three points, 1-9 to 1-6, with a quarter of the contest remaining.
Maynooth, however, regained control, and three points in as many minutes from James Walshe, Simon Mackey and Josh Gunne eased them to victory, despite a late Salesian rally.
