All in blood as Micko's boy leads underdogs to glory
Like father, like son ... Karl O'Dwyer, son of Kerry legend Micko, proved that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree when steering St Mary's to a historic first Wicklow SFC title in Aughrim yesterday.
It was an extraordinary achievement by the son of the record-breaking former Kerry, Kildare, Laois and Wicklow manager who managed the Coolkenno-Shillelagh combination to a surprise Miley Cup success in their first year in existence when they toppled powerhouses Rathnew.
Two goals from Paddy Byrne halted Rathnew's hopes of winning a third successive county title as the side prevailed on a 2-5 to 0-10 scoreline.
The veteran Waterville maestro was in attendance to support his son, who won an All-Star in 1998 after helping Micko's Kildare reach the All-Ireland final.
Mr O'Dwyer Snr didn't leave Aughrim empty-handed either, as he was honoured with a special presentation in recognition of his five years in charge of the Garden County.
