Ace Carthy punishes Longford for sloppy mistakes

Wicklow 3-13
Longford 0-10

Longford have themselves to blame for their loss to Wicklow, who floored them with three goals in their game at Arklow yesterday.

The midlanders contributed to the three decisive Wicklow goals through their own silly mistakes in defence.

The game was barely a minute old when Longford keeper Enda Lyons spilled possession to Shane Carthy on the edge of the box, leaving Carthy an easy tap into the empty net.

Longford recovered from the first mistake and traded points with their opponents, but more was to come on 20 minutes. A free out of defence was sloppily taken and possession given away to Wicklow's full-forward Peadar Burke who fed Anthony McLoughlin for a goal.

Wicklow led by 2-7 to 0-6 at half-time, and Dean Siney got the show on the road again within seconds of the restart with a point. It was game over after 40 minutes when centre-forward Anthony McLoughlin nipped in between two Longford defenders to gain possession and set Carthy up for Wicklow's third goal.

Wicklow have plenty of room for improvement on their performance but Sean Horan and Brian Osbourne in defence, Brendan McGarr and Adam Merriman at midfield, and inside forwards Shane Carthy and Dean Siney were impressive.

This is the second year in succession that Wicklow have beaten Longford in the first round and they now go on to play Laois in the next round, where they will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's loss.
