French drop Pereiro case

CYCLING: France's anti-doping agency dropped its investigation yesterday into Tour de France runner-up Oscar Pereiro, saying the Spanish rider had provided sufficient justification for use of an asthma medication.

Pereiro reportedly tested positive for salbutamol during last summer's Tour.

Meanwhile, there'll be an Irish interest in the Tour of Qatar which gets under way on Sunday.

Irish U-23 champion Páidí O'Brien leads the Sean Kelly/MDonnelly team which also includes Paul Healion, Stephen Gallagher, Mark Cassidy and Belgians Tim Meussen and Rieno Stofferis.

Jail sentence For Bengals ace GRIDIRON: Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry was sent to jail for two days yesterday after pleading guilty to allowing minors to drink alcohol in his hotel room last spring.

He is one of nine players on the NFL team arrested in the past 13 months. Henry has been arrested four times as a Bengals player.

Greek sprinters stand trial ATHLETICS: Greek sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou will stand trial on Monday on perjury charges relating to their alleged motorcycle accident and missed doping test before the 2004 Olympics.

Judicial officials said yesterday the duo would be tried along with coach Christos Tzekos, who is charged with importing illegal substances.

We are innocent, and this is the chance to prove it," stated Tzekos. "For us there is no case in this."

China break for Whirlwind SNOOKER: Jimmy White took a step towards rescuing his season by reaching the final qualifying round of the China Open in Prestatyn yesterday.

White defeated Bristol's Andrew Norman 5-1 to win his first best-of-nine-frames match in a ranking event since the Grand Prix in October 2005.
