A Premier League footballer was left red-faced as an opponent pulled down his shorts in front of thousands of fans in a televised match last night.

Spurs were playing Aston Villa in the Capital Cup  when the bizarre incident occurred just after half-time.

Villla's Nicklas Helenius nipped in behind Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen as they chased a pass into the box.

In his desperation to recover the lost ground, Vertonghen stumbled and as he was falling made a grab for Helenius. The Belgian succeeded only in grabbing the striker's shorts, yanking them down to his knees just as he was about to shoot at goal.

Helenius carried on anyway, blasting over from an acute angle.

Villa boss Paul Lambert was convinced the incident, which was a major talking point of last night's game, should have reduced Tottenham to 10 men.

To Lambert's disbelief, referee Jon Moss opted to give a goal-kick rather than a penalty that surely would have been accompanied by Vertonghen's exit.

Spurs went on to win the match 4-0.
