LAOIS 2-16

CARLOW 1-10

THE Laois hurlers set up a winner-takes-all meeting with Dublin at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny on Sunday week when they eliminated Carlow from the round-robin section of the Guinness Leinster championship at Dr Cullen Park last night.

A shock result looked on the cards when Laois trailed by 1-7 to 0-6 at half-time, but they produced a spell-binding start to the second half, scoring 1-5 without reply in 12 minutes to storm into a 1-11 to 1-7 lead.

The Laois goal came four minutes after the interval when, following a move which went the full length of the field, impressive centre-forward David Cuddy crashed the ball to the net.

That scoring blitz had a devastating effect on Carlow's morale and their challenge petered out and Fionan O'Sullivan sealed the issue seven minutes from time when he weaved his way through the Carlow defence to score Laois's second goal.

The strong committed hurling of PJ Peacock, Paul Cuddy, Declan Conroy, Declan Rooney, David Cuddy and lively substitute Anthony Coffey provided Laois with an abundance of possession. While they ran up a big tally, their mentors will be unhappy with the fact that they shot 18 wides.

Thomas Doyle, Johnny Nevin, Declan Kavanagh, Robert Foley and Pat Coady did well for Carlow but, like their footballers three days earlier, their championship campaign is now over.

Carlow did well in the first half, playing with the type of flair which almost brought them a shock win over Dublin 11 days earlier.

The sides were level on four occasions in the opening 20 minutes, but Carlow went ahead in the 30th minute when Ciaran Jordan found the net following a huge free by Thomas Doyle.
