Irish bookmakers were licking their wounds this morning after Arsenal's 2-1 victory at Villa Park caused them to lose €5m as a result of football accumulators.

The Gunners' win completed a clean sweep for the top eight teams in the Premier League which resulted in a mouthwatering 2/1 accumulator.

Experts in the UK claimed that the result cost in excess of €30m with the figure in Ireland expected to be closer to €5m.

“The weekend results have dealt British bookmakers their worst ever losses on football,” said Simon Clare of Coral.

“I’d estimate that the industry has lost around £25m – the biggest hit we have suffered since Frankie Dettori rode all seven winners at Ascot in 1996.

“Saturday was bad enough, then we were desperately hoping that either City or Liverpool would slip up yesterday, but there could be more to come with thousands of accumulators rolling on to Arsenal at Aston Villa.”

Arsenal's triumph last night followed weekend victories for the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Everton and Southampton.
