Galway v Donegal is the match of the weekend.

This time last year both were senior provincial champions. Both have since lost their crowns and now they’re facing off to win an All-Ireland quarter-final crack at Dublin.

Donegal beat Westmeath in this year’s top-class Lidl Division 2 final but have since lost some key players  like scoring ace Geraldine McLaughlin to America for the summer, and their last game was a shock one-point  Ulster semi-final loss to Cavan.

Teresa Doherty, Ciara Hegarty and the versatile Katy Herron lead their defence. Gráinne Houston and Karen Guthrie now boss their centre-field and, upfront, Niamh Hegarty and Yvonne McMonagle are real stars.

Galway’s bid for a fifth Connacht title in-a-row was foiled in the provincial final. They stuck with Mayo until the half-way point but missed chances and a sin-binning then saw the game slip from them.

But what they’ve lost in experience this year has been made up by young talents like Megan Glynn, the Ward twins Nicola and Louise and Olivia Divilly. Their full-forward line, especially, with Edel Concannon, Roisin Leonard and Louise Ward, is a great blend of youth and experience.

These sides met in the All-Ireland junior final in 2002 which Galway won. Just two years later they were All-Ireland senior champions but Johanna Connolly and Patricia Gleeson are the only remaining players from that side.

Verdict:  Galway.
