IT PROVED to be a very happy bank holiday weekend for Saints FC as they cashed in on a six point lead at the top of the table.
For the second week in a row the Wexford side recorded a 1-2 win on their travels. Last week the Matt Kelly Memorial Grounds was their destination, this week it was the Vartry Grounds as they locked horns with Newtown United and once again they dug their heels in and recorded a victory by the narrowest of margins.
And the weekend got even sweeter for the Gorey men when they heard that Glencormac United and Seaview Wanderers, the second and third placed sides respectively, had played out a 1-1 draw in their contest in Arklow. David Kavanagh and Nathan Cardin netted for the home and away side respectively.
That stalemate between the title challengers paved the way for Newtown United B to close the gap on them should they overcome Conary United in their tussle, and the Magpies did so in devastating fashion.
David Harvey inflicted the most damage as he returned home with the match ball in recognition for his four goal haul. Graham Isherwood chipped in with two while Peter Farrell contributed a single as they ran out 1-7 winners.
