RATHNEW AFC A flexed their attacking muscles last weekend as they avoided a potential banana skin in the Wicklow Cup on Friday evening.
The Villagers had to contend with the visit of Division 2 outfit Glencormac United but a strong first half showing from the hosts killed off any hopes that the Glens might have had of causing a shock.
Rathnew broke United's resolve in the 20 th minute and they ran in three more efforts in the opening 45 minutes, although a Simon Doyle penalty gave the away side a glimmer of hope as they trailed 4-1 at the break.
That glimmer of hope expanded when substitute Emmett Burke pulled a goal back for the Kilmacanogue side but Rathnew's superiority shone through in the end as they added two more goals to seal a 6-2 win.
Jody Merrigan notched two of those goals, with Shane Doyle, Matt Foley, BA Franey and Ken Doyle all registering singles for the Premier Division contenders in what was a most convincing victory.
