GOALS by the Oldum brothers, Ross and Dean, sent Newtown on their way to a good victory over Kiltegan at Kiltegan on Friday.
The home side led twice in the first quarter but when Dean Odlum manufactured an excellent goal the 'Magpies' were on their way. Odlum, who was getting no change out of Blain Harmon on the edge of the square, moved out momentarily to midfield, won and took a quick free to John Heffernan, ran on for the return pass and gave Kiltegan goalie Ciaran O'toole no chance with a blasting shot to the net.
That score left Newtown leading by 1-05 to 0-03 at half time. When Ross Odlum, Newtown's top scorer, blasted home a goal in the second half the writing was on the wall for the home side.
Peter O'neill's men looked in fine shape and if they can keep up this form they could be a force to be reckoned with in the year ahead. Paul O'riordan and Cathal Mcnichol gave the visitors a decisive pull at midfield. John Farrell was the outstanding player for the home side.
Scorers: Newtown: Ross Odlum 1-4; Dean Odlum 12; Sean Heffernan, John Heffernan, Cathal Mcnichol, Andy Halpin and Mark Fitzsimons 0-1 each.
Kiltegan: John Keogh 0-4; Stephen Farrell, Fergal Harmon and Ray Kelly 0-1 each.
