ST. FERGAL'S took another long-awaited step forward in their hunt for promotion on Sunday.
They had looked nailed on for Premier Division for much of the season but their sporadic league form as of late casted much doubt over their promotion ambitions. But the Bray side recorded their eighth league win of the campaign on Sunday and they now appear all but set to join St. Anthony's in the top tier next season.
Newtown United B was their victims this weekend as the Saints inflicted a 1-3 defeat on the Magpies. Conor Eccleston was on target for United but efforts from Trevor Mcmahon, Colm Dutton and David Dixon earned Fergal's the win.
Rathnew AFC B currently occupy second place and they also tasted victory this weekend in a match that saw three red cards, seven goals, one penalty and a late, late winner for the Villagers.
It was Friday evening when they clashed with Arklow United and the match was deadlocked at three goals apiece going into the final few minutes but then the nine men of Rathnew popped up with a winner to steal all three points. Jay Taylor, Johnny Byrne, Paul Ronan and Chris Healy did the damage for the Shamrock Park club.
But despite their current position, Rathnew AFC B can't gain promotion due to Rathnew AFC A currently being a Premier Division side.
Also in action on Friday night were Fassaroe YC and Wolfe Tone Celtic as the Bray rivals did battle in Fassaroe. But it was the visitors who emerged with the bragging rights courtesy of a 1-5 triumph.
