Curse of the commentator

THE CURSE of the commentator has struck. Just a week after this very newspaper waxed lyrical about Wicklow Town being halfway to clinching the Division 1 title, they go and lose.
A trip to Shamrock Park proved to be their undoing, where Rathnew AFC negotiated their way to a 3-2 victory. Jody Merrigan rounded off an extremely busy week (he played three matches between club and county in six days) as he struck a double against the Finlay Park men. Josh Graham was also on target for the hosts. Eddie Kelly and David 'DOC' O'Connor bagged the goals for the visitors, who have seen their lead at the top of the table slashed to two points.
St. Patrick's A are the side hunting Wicklow Town down. Adam Tuke has been one of the main reasons for their title charge this season and the Avoca side were singing their striker's praises once again on Sunday as his goal earned them a 1-0 win over Celtic Stars.
Celtic Stars have only played five league fixtures this season, but St. Patrick's are over halfway through their league schedule now.
Two sides that reached the halfway stage this weekend were Avonmore FC and Wicklow Rovers, and the meeting of that duo resulted in Avonmore moving six points clear of their opponents and the relegation zone.
Dean Gahan and Paudie O'Toole both landed doubles for the hosts in Rathdrum as they shot up to fifth spot, courtesy of their 4-1 triumph over the Whitegates club.
